Elements Kitchen, the much-anticipated restaurant by Elements Café owner Onil Chibás and chef de cuisine Alberto Morales, opened in late January to warm praise, bringing what the Los Angeles Times called “creativity and verve” to its Pasadena locale. Housed in the historic Pasadena Playhouse building, the upscale restaurant and lounge presents Chibás’ New American menu, which illustrates singular “elements,” or featured ingredients, in various compositions. Elements Kitchen’s unique inventive menu, along with its elegant décor and refined service, has put the restaurant on the map as one of Pasadena’s key dining destinations.

(PASADENA, CA) — Elements Kitchen, the much-anticipated restaurant by Elements Café owner Onil Chibás and chef de cuisine Alberto Morales, opened in late January to warm praise, bringing what the Los Angeles Times called “creativity and verve” to its Pasadena locale.

With a full liquor license recently put in place, Chibás has directed the attention to Elements’ bar and lounge, a casual but classy gathering spot for diners to relax over cocktails and simple bites. For the bar, Chibás recruited cocktail consultant Michel Dozois of Névé Luxury Ice Company to develop a smart program that parallels the restaurant’s philosophy of “elemental” ingredients.

“We’re thrilled to have Michel on board,” says Chibás. “His cocktail program elevates the bar and lounge to the level of food and service that we offer in the dining room.”

Showcasing ingredients such as “Lime” or “Lemon,” Dozois created a list of serious handcrafted cocktails made with the finest spirits, fresh juices, house-made syrups and mixes. The menu focuses on simple classics like the Gin Rickey, Gordon’s Cup and the Mint Julep, with room for creativity in an aptly named “Dealer’s Choice,” a custom concoction made by the bartender based on a guest’s preferred spirits and flavors.

The bar features Névé’s specialty ice cubes, a key element to top-quality cocktails. Névé provides custom-shaped, hand-cut ice perfectly suited to all types of cocktail glasses. The company uses a special purification and freezing process that ensures that the ice melts as slowly as possible, chilling the cocktail at an optimal temperature and keeping water dilution to a minimum.

Unique to Elements Kitchen is the new First Sips, a pre-cocktail designed to clear the palate and stimulate the appetite. The refreshing half-size cocktail ($5) will change daily and makes for the perfect aperitif before dinner.

Following its successful Wednesday Night Sketches,a weekly-changing menu of small plates ($5) all revolving around one single ingredient (such as scallops or asparagus), Elements Kitchen has also launched Thursday Liquid Sketches, a similar concept involving cocktails. The bar will create three different cocktails for $5, each centered on an element such as hibiscus or cucumber. Both Wednesday and Thursday Sketches are offered in the lounge only after 5 p.m. Guests can learn the weekly element by signing up for the Elements newsletter or by following the Twitter feed @elementskitchen.

Inspired by the beauty and bounty of the seasons, the interior of Elements Kitchen is lush, vibrant and soulful, with dark woods, hand-blown glass light fixtures, rich fabrics and artwork that mimics the colors and textures of outdoor foliage. The restaurant features a magnificent open kitchen, a spacious dining room with a grand chef’s table, and a full bar and lounge.

The creative dinner menu plays on both flavors and words. Under the element “Duck,” Elements features a “PF&J” with Pistachio Butter, Foie Gras and Jellied Sauternes, and under “Tomato,” there is a Beefsteak Tomato Tartare with a yellow tomato “yolk.” Listed under “Egg” is the popular “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (pictured), a luxurious French omelet with lobster, crab and caviar. Desserts, listed in elements as “Chocolate” and “Citrus,” include a White Chocolate and Coffee Mousse and Lime-Rosemary Sherbet with Honey Granita.

The bar menu, offered nightly in the lounge only, features such favorites as the Duck Confit Eggrolls and Flank Steak & Kimchi Tacos, along with a dressed-up Elements Burger topped with braised oxtail and foie gras.

Elements Kitchen serves lunch from Tuesday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The abbreviated lunch menu features a selection of elegant soups, salads and sandwiches ranging from French Onion Soup a L’envers to Duck Carpaccio & Confit Salad to Shrimp & Lobster Roll. A selection of larger lunch plates such as Grilled Asian Shortribs and Seared Poblano Black Cod offer a heartier selection for more leisurely lunches.

Chris Meeske, owner of Mission Wines in South Pasadena, developed an extensive and eclectic wine list to complement the menu, offering well-priced selections from California, the Mediterranean and South America.

Elements Kitchen is located on 37 S. El Molino Ave. in Pasadena. The restaurant serves dinner Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. The bar and lounge are open from Tuesday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to midnight. Lunch is served from Tuesday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Monday. Reservations are recommended.
